Recycle Can Collection Day
Every week, we collect cans from the community. Every 3 weeks, we sort and load them in our ReStore truck and take them to the recycling center. This is a messy, smelly, and loud job – but it needs to be done! In the last fiscal year, our recycling program brought in over $20,000, and all funds went towards building affordable homes and making critical repairs in Hanover and King William counties.
Volunteers will be working in the back of the ReStore at 7199 Stonewall Parkway Mechanicsville, VA 23111. The majority of this work will be in the back parking lot.
The team assembles at 9 a.m. and gets ready to work. Please arrive, clock in at the ReStore register, and head to the back of the store. Volunteers will continue to work until all cans have been sorted and loaded in the truck. The hours for this volunteer opportunity may vary, depending on the workload.
Appropriate Dress Code:
- We work in all weather conditions.
- Baggy clothes, open toe-shoes, or jewelry could create safety hazards in the store
- Wear pants, please do not wear shorts. There is a chance you will come in contact with sharp or rusty metals.
- No revealing or vulgar clothing should be worn
Recycle Volunteer Expectations:
- No smoking on the premises
- Keep areas clean and neat
- Cooperate with staff and other volunteers
- No abusive language or misbehavior
- Use common sense at all times and be mindful of the safety of others
Things to bring:
- Water and snacks are highly recommended.
- We highly suggest wearing gloves. If the volunteer has work gloves that they like to use and fit well, we suggest bringing them. There are some available in the office.
- Ear plugs are suggested, however are not available currently by Habitat.
If you are working for court, pre-court, or school and will need verification of hours, you must contact Amanda Gunter at agunter@hkwhabitat.org or 804-569-6108x104 BEFORE signing up and working your first shift. If you do not do this, no verification of hours will be given. We are unable to help court or precourt individuals whose charge is theft-related, or violent or sexual in nature. Individuals may not contact the office on behalf of someone else.
We know that things come up - if you need to cancel your shift, please do so at least 24 hours in advance. This allows us to find other volunteers to fill in!
