Join Habitat, a local Garden Club, and the homeowner, Ivy, to plant new shrubs, flowers, and more to get her house to feel a little more homey!
DURING YOUR WORKDAY:
- Please arrive at the home by 9:00 a.m.! Work begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends once all plants/bushes have been planted and garden beds are mulched.
- Site location: 206 Dewey Street, Ashland, VA 23005
- Please wear appropriate clothing to the worksite. Baggy clothes, open toe-shoes, or jewelry could create safety hazards on a construction site. Keep the weather in mind! Rain will make the site muddy, so plan accordingly.
- Please eat a good breakfast before coming out to work with us. We want you to be ready for the day!
- Lunch is not provided.
- Water and snacks are highly recommended.
- Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.
- Please do not use your cell phones on the site, unless there is an emergency. Volunteering on an active construction site requires everyone’s full attention!
- We provide safety and protective equipment. If you have work gloves that you like to use and fit well, we suggest bringing them.
- We work in all weather conditions to get our project done, so come prepared!
- MUST BE ABLE TO DIG HOLES, LIFT BAGS OF MULCH & MOVE PLANTS.
PARKING:
- There is a small driveway and on-street parking. Please be mindful of the homeowner and her neighbors and do not block their driveways or mailboxes.
COVID:
- If you are not feeling well, have a fever, or have been exposed to COVID please stay home, and do not come and volunteer. We can always reschedule you!
CANCELLATIONS:
- Habitat reserves the right to cancel based on weather, or lack of work on a construction site. At times, there may also be changes in location in order to be the most productive in providing affordable housing in the community.
ABOUT THE FUTURE HOMEOWNER:
Ivy and her two children currently live in Richmond and she has been a dietary specialist at an assisted living community in Mechanicsville for the last five years. Her adult son Kenneth enjoys playing basketball and is working full time. Her daughter Keymani is a member of the Center for the Arts program at her high school and plans to become a photographer.
Ivy is worried about the violence in her current neighborhood. While her daughter was home alone there was a deadly shooting that occurred in front of their apartment leaving bullet holes in her walls and in the side of her car. After hearing about the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program on social media, Ivy attended an information session and submitted her application. To prepare for her mortgage she had to learn about money management and credit scores.
The family desires a stable home for their future and Ivy believes that this opportunity will provide her and her children with that stability. Ivy said she is most looking forward to feeling safe enough to walk outside. Dewey Street will bring them a sense of peace and comfort. Ivy believes that “God works! Worry about nothing, pray about everything.” She wants others to know that they can achieve their goal even when they think it’s impossible.
