Faith Build - Wesley St Ashland Project

Expired

Description

DURING YOUR WORKDAY:

  • Please arrive at our construction site by 8:15 a.m.!  At that time, we will go over basic safety and construction methods critical for the day. Construction begins at 8:30 a.m. and could last until 3:30 p.m. DO NOT BE LATE. No one will be able to come and go during the day.

  • Site location:  510 Wesley Street Ashland, VA 23009

  • Please wear appropriate clothing to the worksite. Baggy clothes, open toe-shoes, or jewelry could create safety hazards on a construction site. Keep the weather in mind!  Rain will make the site muddy, so plan accordingly.

  • Please eat a good breakfast before coming out to work with us. We want you to be ready for the day!

  • Lunch is not provided, so bring a packed lunch. There will be a 30-minute break for lunch usually around 11:30 a.m.  Do not leave the worksite during this time. (Because this is a Faith Build, some local churches and organizations have volunteered to feed groups on their work day. If you are on one of those work days, Habitat will notify you.)

  • Water and snacks are highly recommended.

  • Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.

  • Please do not use your cell phones on the site, unless there is an emergency. Volunteering on an active construction site requires everyone’s full attention!

  • We provide safety and protective equipment. If you have work gloves that you like to use and fit well, we suggest bringing them.

  • We work in all weather conditions to get our project done, so come prepared!

  • Volunteers should be able to lift at least 25 pounds and stand for the majority of the workday.

PARKING:

  • Please park beside our lot, in First Baptist Church Ashland's parking lot. The church is at the corner of Wesley Street and Thompson St.

WHY IS IT CALLED A FAITH BUILD?

  • Habitat is built on a foundation of faith. Our mission is to build safe, affordable housing with people in Hanover and King William, and that comes from a desire to put God’s love into action. We are God’s hands and feet, here to serve others and show them His Love. Habitat is offering a tangible experience, called a Faith Build, that will allow you to engage those around you, live your faith, and offer a unique opportunity to love your neighbor. Our goal is to have this home fully staffed and funded by our faith-based community.

  • We want faith-based organizations to choose a way to support Habitat - serve, pray, and/or give. What is remarkable about this project is the lot is from one of our Faith Build partners, who will be this homeowner’s new neighbor.

  • Download the Faith Build Packet here, or visit our Faith Build webpage.

COVID:

  • If you are not feeling well, have a fever, or have been exposed to COVID please stay home, and do not come and volunteer.  We can always reschedule you!

 CANCELLATIONS:

  • Habitat reserves the right to cancel based on weather, or lack of work on a construction site. At times, there may also be changes in location in order to be the most productive in providing affordable housing in the community.

ABOUT THE FUTURE HOMEOWNER:

Krystal was born and raised in Hanover County. She and her siblings attended Patrick Henry High School. Her mother was raised in the town of Ashland where her grandmother still resides. Krystal and her 10-year-old daughter Nyla are currently sharing a room at her father’s house while she is saving money for her own home.

Nyla is a loving and selfless child. She is currently a gymnast at All American and wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up. She attended the Christian Child Development Center at First Baptist Church where her aunt is the assistant director. She will be starting middle school next year! They currently belong to Mt Olivet Baptist Church in Louisa and Nyla was recently baptized at First Independence Methodist Church of Richmond. They enjoy worshiping at different churches with family and friends.

Krystal said that being a single mom has been hard. It was a struggle for her to afford childcare while working full-time and attending classes at night. She felt guilty because she barely saw her daughter. Now she has her associate's degree in health science and is working as a medical assistant!

Krystal understands that God may not come when you want Him, but He is always on time. She feels that God led her to Habitat for Humanity. She said this experience has felt surreal but wants others to know that it is not the easy way out. She said that the homeownership program is a great way to learn and connect with the community. Having affordable housing is important to Krystal because she needs financial stability to ensure she can provide more opportunities for her daughter. They are looking forward to having privacy and space where they can grow a garden.

This home will provide the independence and security Krystal desires.
