NOTICE: Volunteers scheduled for Dec. 16 & 17 please go to 206 Dewey Street Ashland, VA 23005 instead of our Doswell lot. Feel free to reach out if there is any question. agunter@hkwhabitat.org
DURING YOUR WORKDAY:
- Please arrive at our construction site by 8:15 a.m.! At that time, we will go over basic safety and construction methods critical for the day. Construction begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. DO NOT BE LATE. No one will be able to come and go during the day.
- Site location: 17040 North Telegraph Rd. Doswell, VA 23047 This address may not get you directly to the site. You may need to drive a little on that small stretch of road to find the house.
- Please wear appropriate clothing to the worksite. Baggy clothes, open toe-shoes, or jewelry could create safety hazards on a construction site. Keep the weather in mind! Rain will make the site muddy, so plan accordingly.
- Please eat a good breakfast before coming out to work with us. We want you to be ready for the day!
- Lunch is not provided, so please bring a packed lunch. There will be a 30-minute break for lunch usually around 11:30 a.m. Do not leave the worksite during this time.
- Water and snacks are highly recommended.
- Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.
- Please do not use your cell phones on the site, unless there is an emergency. Volunteering on an active construction site requires everyone’s full attention!
- We provide safety and protective equipment. If you have work gloves that you like to use and fit well, we suggest bringing them.
- We work in all weather conditions to get our project done, so come prepared!
PARKING:
- DO NOT PARK ON THE STREET. Please park on the construction site or at the gravel lot on the corner of Verdon Rd. and N. Telegraph Rd. It is a short walk to our lot!
COVID:
- If you are not feeling well, have a fever, or have been exposed to COVID please stay home, and do not come and volunteer. We can always reschedule you!
CANCELLATIONS:
- Habitat reserves the right to cancel based on weather, or lack of work on a construction site. At times, there may also be changes in location in order to be the most productive in providing affordable housing in the community.
ABOUT THE FUTURE HOMEOWNER:
Keedra grew up in Hanover County and became a mother at the age of 19. Once her son was born, she knew she needed to do whatever had to be done to make sure he was taken care of. Damien is now fourteen and Keedra wants to finally buy them a home so that they can say goodbye to their apartment! She says having a home means “that my son will have somewhere to live if something were to ever happen to me.”
She had been looking for a home on the market but couldn’t find anything in her price range. She saw a post from a former schoolmate about their Habitat home and she decided to apply. Keedra works at a local bank and is a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church. She teaches vacation bible school, is a part of the young adult ministry, and is on the praise dance team! Damien plays football and wants to get his CDL license to become a truck driver.
Keedra’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11 'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' She wants others to know that “if I can do it, you can too!”
