We have been "hoarding" cans for the past several months. There is a new grant that starts June 1 where we can begin turning the cans in, and weighing them. The top affiliate in weight wins $10,000. The majority of the cans that have been in storage will need to be pulled out (they are in garbage bags) sorted, and then put in our ReStore truck, to be taken to the recycling center. It is a messy, smelly, and loud job. But in 2020, the Hanover Habitat recycling program brought in $12k to providing decent homes, despite COVID. Habitat will have gloves and ear plugs available if you do not have any on hand.
At 9am, the team assembles, and gets ready to work. Please arrive then, for a brief orientation.
Our goal for the morning will be to load up one truck for a trip to the recycling center. After one truck is complete, you can either stay to work on other items, or you can be done for the day. If you want to stay until 5, when the Director of Community Engagement kicks everyone out, then that’s fine too!
We work in the warehouse behind the administrative building at 9161 Atlee Road Mechanicsville, VA 23116. Due to COVID, the doors are kept locked, so you'll just need to knock and I'll open it and let you in.
